The City of Searcy announced that the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) will be hosting a Cemetery Conservation Workshop at Oak Grove Cemetery on Saturday, September 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This engaging workshop aims to educate and empower the community in the vital practice of cemetery conservation, fostering the preservation of local history for generations to come.
Located at Oak Grove Cemetery, 600 E. Moore Ave., Searcy, the Fall 2023 AHPP Cemetery Conservation Workshop will offer attendees the opportunity to delve into the basics of cemetery conservation. Renowned expert Rusty Brenner, founder of Texas Cemetery Restoration, will lead the workshop, providing invaluable insights and hands-on training in the techniques necessary to maintain and preserve these historic sites.
Throughout the day, participants will engage in cleaning, making basic repairs, and the leveling and straightening of gravestones. The workshop is designed to empower attendees with practical skills that will contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts of Oak Grove Cemetery.
Agenda for September 23:
9 a.m. - Noon: Workshop introduction and overview, covering cleaning, leveling, and basic repairs.
Noon - 1 p.m.: Lunch provided by AHPP on the cemetery grounds.
1 p.m. - 4 p.m.: Continued hands-on sessions focusing on cleaning, leveling, and basic repairs.
Oak Grove Cemetery is currently maintained through the City of Searcy and most of the maintenance comes from those completing community service.
"In order to maintain the cemetery, the community service team has to be out there every week mowing, weed eating and more,” Code Enforcement Director Jeff Webb said. “They really do a great job taking care of the grounds."
In addition to the workshop, the cemetery is in need of a new fence and various updates. Members of the community interested in contributing to the conservation and enhancement of Oak Grove Cemetery are encouraged to reach out to Searcy City Hall for donation opportunities.
